May 2, 2019 – Province of Ontario, where the Great Lakes are and millions of mosquitos and black flies.

Earlier this year I promised you to blog about all the states we drove through on our way from Port Hope, ON Canada to Pahrump, NV USA.

I will blog in exactly the order we traveled. We left the province on Ontario.

Ontario is a province in east-central Canada that borders the U.S. and the Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario). Canada’s capital is Ottawa in Ontario.
I have been to Ottawa when we paddled with the West Wind Brigade in 2017. On the Rideau Canal was the first time I was in a canoe that’s why I remember that so well. It also was the first time I met Native People on Victoria Island.

“The province is named after Lake Ontario, a term thought to be derived from Ontarí:io, a Huron (Wyandot) word meaning "great lake", or possibly skanadario, which means "beautiful water" in the Iroquoian languages. Ontario has about 250,000 freshwater lakes.”

Ontario has large areas of uplands, the highest point is Ishpatina Ridge at 693 m/ 2,274 ft above sea level in Temagami.
You probably heard about Niagara Falls, well at least if you have read my blog. Niagara Falls is in Ontario.

Before the Europeans, the white people arrived in Ontario the region was inhabited by Algonquian (Ojibwe, Cree and Algonquin) in the northern/western parts of Ontario and Iroquois and Wyandot (Huron) people more in the southeast. During the 17-century, the Algonquians and Hurons fought against the Iroquois.

Étienne Bûlé, a French explorer explored part of the area in 1610-1612. The English Explorer Henry Hudson sailed into Hudson Bay in 1611 and claimed the area for England.
Samuel de Champlain reached Lake Huron in 1615, and French missionaries began to establish posts along the Great Lakes. French settlement was hampered by their hostilities with the Iroquois, who allied themselves with the British.
The Hurons were devastated by European infectious deceases from 1634 to 1640 and by 1700, the Iroquois had seceded from Ontario and the Mississaugs of the Ojibwa had settled the north shore of Lake Ontario. The remaining Huron settled north of Quebec.

Hudson, that name might sound familiar to you. Ever heard about Hudson Bay Company? The Hudson Bay Company was a fur trade company. The fur traders traveled by canoe and while I was in Canada I have been in some of the towns where a Hudson Bay Company used to be.

In my humble opinion I don’t like Ontario too much as there are way too many mosquitos and black flies and it rains too much. On the other hand, all the bears, lynx, wolves and coyotes make it very interesting for a dog like me. Well, unless you meet one the predators eye to eye and loose a leg, an eye or even your life. It’s better to stay away from them although I need to admit bear smells good and I was tempted to have a look were he lived.

In case you don't know what black flies are watch that video:
