February 7, 2019 – What a windy day

My humans got up very early today. We’ve been on the road at 7 am. Are they completely nuts? I do need my sleep and I hate getting up early. At least I could sleep in the car, although it was really shaky.

It was still dark when we left the hotel but it wasn’t raining, just very chilly. Later the sun came out and it was a nice day. Well, it would have been if it hadn't been so windy.
We left the state of Texas just a few hours after we left the hotel. Now we were in New Mexico and by crossing the state line we also had a change of the time zone.
In New Mexico the wind got stronger while we drove uphill for quite a while. Our car had a hard time driving up the hill with all the wind. But our car wasn’t the only one. There were trucks pulling trailers and the trailers went from left to right and right to left.
When we stopped at a gas station my mistress was told that this was a calm day. They always have that much wind. The elevation was around 7,000 ft. / 2.100 m and the land is flat. We could see rain clouds rolling in and there was still snow on the ground.

After we passed Albuquerque and drove across the mountain the wind was over.
New Mexico is the 36th state by population and the 5th largest state by the area. It’s capital Santa Fe was founded 1610. New Mexico was colonized by as part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain in 1598. I even walked on the historic Route 66. We drove on the Route 66 today. My humans were very exited about that. How can you be exited to drive on a specific route? Route 66 was one of the original highways in the US highway system. Originally it ran from Chicago, IL through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before it ended in Santa Monica, CA. It covered 2,448 miles / 3.940 km. Route 66 served as the main route for people that migrated west in the 1930’s. In 1985 Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System. Route 66 was important for the economy.

In the afternoon we crossed the state line to Arizona. About one quarter of Arizona is made up of Indian Reservations. There are 27 federally recognized Native American tribes, including the Navajo Nation, the largest in the state and the United States, with more than 300,000 citizens.
Arizona is the 6th largest and the 14th most populous state.

We drove 1,220 km / 758 miles that day and I am glad to be able to leave the car. The motel had a dog park where I could run around a little and read the local newspaper with my nose.
The girl at the reception of the Ramada Hotel in Kingman was very friendly. The hotel was ok.
It was very cold in Kingman. I always thought it is warm in Arizona.
